In this issue: Measuring Training Results

Is that good feeling you get when you review training evaluation forms tempered by a niggling feeling that there is more to evaluating the true benefits of training?  Are you only able to get to the second level of Kirkpatrick’s four levels of evaluation for most of your learning initiatives? Unfortunately, you’re in good company. Despite a wealth of research and practical experience on measurement, most organizations fall short in their ability to demonstrate the true value of training.

As organizations demand a more thorough assessment of their learning initiatives, training professionals are pressed to get better at measuring the results of their efforts. If your organization needs to move measurement to higher levels, there are some practical and inexpensive things that can be done. The key to measuring deeper is to talk about measurement when anyone starts talking about training.

Too often organizations realize that their day-to-day operational issues are driving their learning. This is especially true when line managers drive most training requests or when catalogues form the basis for training decisions. That’s not to say that day-to-day issues are not worth addressing. It means that learning initiatives are reactionary rather than visionary. It also means that training may not be aligned with the business goals of the organization.
