Training
The most effective approach to performance appraisal training
includes both process and skills.
Managers need to understand the elements of the performance
review process, such as forms and tools. They also benefit from
understanding the rationale behind the design of that process so
they can ensure each step achieves its objectives.
Managers also need to develop the skills to effectively apply
the performance review process, including: how to complete effective
documentation, how to assess performance, how to provide
constructive feedback, how to respond to resistance and how to
generate discussion during performance meetings.
As always, managers need time to process and practice what they
have learned. Give them what they need by providing on-job coaching
on how to prepare and conduct performance appraisals.

Weighing
in on Performance Appraisals
There are few parts of
a manager's job that result in more discomfort than preparing
for and conducting the annual performance appraisal
interview. For many managers, just the thought of
discussing employee performance results in feelings of
apprehension, heart palpitations, and sweaty palms. The causes
aren’t hard to understand.
Why You
Shouldn't Dump Appraisals
It is no secret that
many managers would like to dump any semblance of appraisal
systems that still remain in the depths of their
organizational files and leave employee performance to luck
and the moon. But it may not be the system itself that
is at fault – it may be the way the system is
applied.
Six Steps to a
Performance Discussion
There are six steps involved in
completing any performance discussion. When all six steps are
completed competently, the performance interview results in
shared ownership for behaviour improvement.
