Learning Strategies for Coaches
Coaching is a practical skill, so it makes sense that coaches' training be as practical as the skill itself. We find that a blended learning approach works best.
For example, new skills can be learned in bite-sized pieces, followed by on-the-job application and debriefs to ensure the successful transfer of skills.
Evaluation tools are a useful guide for managers and employees during coaching sessions. They need to be comprehensive enough to generate discussion but not so complex as to hamper the process.
And remember, coaches benefit from coaching too. Higher level managers or learning specialists can coach coaches to excel in facilitating feedback discussions.
Most new coaches will tell you that their first attempts at coaching rarely go as planned.  Allow coaches to develop their skills over time.

Managers Look to the Field for Inspiration

When deciding how to get the best performance from employees, managers are looking to the sports arena for inspiration and ideas. Coaches and managers have the same objectives: coaches want to win the game through the efforts of their players; while managers want to see revenues increase through the efforts of their employees.

Transform Managers into Coaches
How are managers transformed into coaches?  First, companies develop their managers' skills, and then they develop the skills of their employees.  Coaching skills do not come naturally to most people.  Managers need to become proficient in areas such as effective communication, goal-setting, interpersonal skills, and effective team management.

What to do When Trouble Brews
Most managers agree that one of their most dreaded tasks is dealing with conflict between two employees. Serious disagreements that affect work relationships don't happen often, but when they do they can have an impact on entire departments and organizations. Managers have an important role to play in moving those involved toward resolution.
